A Toddler-Friendly Afternoon at Bird Paradise with My 15-Month-Old

This weekend, we decided to go to Bird Paradise Singapore as the first day of long weekend. We went there in the afternoon cause my toddler took a nap in the morning as she woke up early at 6AM. We took the Mandai bus at Khatib to the first stop of the bus.

Here is roughly how we structured our day:

Eating at Han's Union

Bird Paradise currently operates daily from 9am–6pm, with last entry at 5pm. The park spans 17 hectares and has more than 3,500 birds across over 400 species. 

Exploring Bird Paradise with a Toddler

Bird Paradise is not really a place where you need to rush from attraction to attraction.

A lot of the fun comes from simply walking through the huge aviaries and letting your toddler notice things at their own pace.

There are currently eight large walk-through aviaries, plus Penguin Cove and Winged Sanctuary. 

1. Heart of Africa

This is the largest aviary and is designed around the forested valleys of Africa. There are more than 80 bird species here.

For toddlers, I think the biggest attraction isn’t necessarily identifying the birds—it’s seeing birds flying, hopping and moving around the environment.

2. Wings of Asia

This area has a beautiful Balinese-inspired landscape with bamboo groves and rice terraces.

It’s also a good place for bird watching, and there are interactive elements such as the water organ and gamelan-inspired features. 

3. Crimson Wetlands

This was one of the visually impressive areas because of all the pink, red and colourful birds.

The Scarlet Ibises

You can look for American flamingos, Scarlet Ibises, Roseate Spoonbills and colourful macaws.

This is also where Crimson Restaurant is located, overlooking the wetlands and waterfall. 

4. Amazonian Jewels

This area recreates a South American rainforest environment.

It is a lovely section for simply slowing down and looking around because the habitat feels very different from the other aviaries.

5. Songs of the Forest

This area focuses on Southeast Asian songbirds.

Instead of just looking for colourful birds, this is a nice place to stop and listen.

For a 15-month-old, the sounds can be just as interesting as the animals themselves.

6. Mysterious Papua

Here you’ll find birds associated with New Guinea, surrounded by a rainforest-inspired environment.

7. Australian Outback

The Australian Outback features eucalyptus-inspired surroundings and birds from Australia, including colourful lorikeets and cockatoos. 

8. Lory Loft

This is one of the livelier areas, with lories, lorikeets and cockatoos.

It’s also associated with the classic bird-feeding experience. If your child enjoys colourful, active animals, this is one I wouldn’t skip.

9. Penguin Cove 🐧

Penguin Cove is probably one of the easiest toddler wins.

Meeting the Penguin

The indoor habitat is cool and comfortable, and you can watch penguins swimming underwater as well as waddling around their rocky habitat.

The current Penguin Cove habitat houses Gentoo, King and Northern Rockhopper penguins, with a Penguin Keeper Talk currently listed daily at 1:30pm. 

Toddler tip: Bring a light cardigan because the penguin area is kept very cold—around 8°C. 

Tips: You can start from the Winged Sanctuary -> Penguin Cove -> Australian Outback -> Mysterious Papua -> Lory Loft -> Songs of the Forest -> Amazonian Jewels -> Crimson Wetland -> Wings of Asia -> Heart of Africa; If you want to explore all the aviaries because it's all connected. Like us, we did it like this and exit after the Crimson Wetland to watch the show at 5:00PM before exploring the remaining aviaries and exited the Bird Paradise.

Activities You Can Do at Bird Paradise

Bird Paradise isn’t just about walking around looking at birds. There are quite a few different experiences available.

🐦 Animal Presentations

There are two major presentations at the PropNex Sky Amphitheatre:

Predators on Wings

Birds of prey such as sea eagles, vultures and hawks demonstrate their natural abilities.

Current listed times are 10:30am and 2:30pm. 

Wings of the World

This is the one we watched at 5pm.

It features colourful birds, parrots, hornbills and a large flock flying across the stage.

The current schedule lists 12:30pm and 5pm. 

Our experience with a toddler

Actually, she was a bit cranky as I woke her up after only napping for 30 minutes. So, I need to hug her and go around to calm her down. But, overall she quite enjoy the show. 😅

Important: Presentation times can change, so check the Mandai app or the official schedule on the day you visit. 

🦜 Animal Feeding Experiences

Depending on the schedule, Bird Paradise offers feeding experiences where visitors can get closer to certain birds.

One example is Shorebird Feeding at Wings of Asia, where visitors can feed pelicans, storks and other birds. The current listing has sessions at 10am and 4:30pm, with advance booking required. 

There are also feeding opportunities involving lories and other birds.

For a 15-month-old, I’d consider these an optional extra rather than something you absolutely need to do.

🧑‍🌾 Keeper Talks

Keeper talks are another great option if your toddler isn’t ready for a long presentation.

Current examples include:

• Penguin Keeper Talk
• Hornbill Keeper Talk
• Other scheduled animal talks

The current Hornbill Keeper Talk is listed at 3pm at Wings of Asia. 

The advantage is that you can simply stand or sit nearby and let your toddler watch.

💦 Egg Splash

If your toddler loves water, don’t forget Egg Splash.

It’s an egg-themed children’s playground with wet-play areas, water slides and shallow pools. 

At 15 months, I’d treat this as a bonus activity, especially if your child enjoys water.

But bring:

• Change of clothes
• Towel
• Swim diaper
• Extra diaper
• Plastic/wet bag
• Sun protection

We stopped for a snack around this area rather than turning the visit into a full water-play session. Actually, she loves water but we didn't have any time to play with water as that time she was napping. It's okay, we will definitely play with the water next time. 😆

🌳 Treetop Play

Bird Paradise also has Treetop Play, a dry playground with trampolines and climbing nets inspired by birds.

For a 15-month-old, some equipment may be more appropriate with close parental supervision, so I’d choose the areas according to your toddler’s current climbing abilities. 

🥨 Our Snack Stop Near Egg Splash

We also stopped for a snack near Egg Splash Café.

Egg Splash Café is located at Egg Splash inside Bird Paradise and serves egg dishes, drinks and snacks. Current operating hours are listed as 10am–5pm on weekdays and 9:30am–5:30pm on weekends/public holidays. 

For a toddler, I like having a snack break built into the itinerary because Bird Paradise involves quite a lot of walking.

Instead of trying to keep going until dinner, we used the snack stop as a little reset.

😴 The Best Part of Our Toddler Schedule: Nap Time

Around 4:30pm, my baby fell asleep. Usually, she was napping at 2:00PM, but she woke up late today, so she was also napping late.

Bird Paradise can be tiring for a toddler because there is:

• Walking
• New sounds
• Birds flying around
• Lots of visual stimulation
• Different temperatures
• New environments

Rather than trying to keep her awake, I let her sleep.

She slept for about 30 minutes, and then I woke her at 5pm for the Wings of the World presentation.

This gave us a surprisingly good balance between exploring and keeping her from becoming completely overtired, and also for her good night sleep.

🎭 5 PM: Wings of the World

After waking her up, we headed to the PropNex Sky Amphitheatre.

The show was probably one of the most memorable parts of our visit because there was so much movement happening in the aie

For a 15-month-old, I wasn’t expecting her to understand what was happening. Instead, I just wanted her to experience:

birds + music + movement + colours + people + excitement.

And that’s really what made the experience special. We also got to see the parrot sang National Day's song and Happy Birthday's song.

🍽️ Dinner at COLLIN’S

After Bird Paradise, we had dinner at COLLIN’S® at Mandai Wildlife WEST.

COLLIN’S is a Western restaurant with options including grills, meats and pizzas, and the Mandai outlet is at #02-10, Mandai Wildlife WEST. Current hours are listed as 10am–10pm Monday–Friday and 9am–10pm on weekends/public holidays. 

I liked this as a dinner option because it meant we didn’t have to travel somewhere else immediately after finishing at Bird Paradise.

🍴 Other Restaurants I Recommend Around Bird Paradise

If you don’t want to eat exactly where we did, there are quite a few options.

Inside Bird Paradise

Crimson Restaurant
Best for: a special meal + views

It’s right in the Crimson Wetlands and overlooks the waterfall and colourful birds. There’s also a daily high tea from 3pm–5:30pm. 

Penguin Cove Restaurant
Best for: families who love penguins

You can eat while watching the penguins swim. It’s open daily from 11am–5:30pm. 

Food Central
Best for: families who want more choices

It’s the casual food court at Central Plaza, with local and Western options and a kid-friendly listing. 

Bird Bakery
Best for: quick breakfast/snack

Located at the Bird Paradise entrance and offers pastries, sandwiches and Owa Coffee. 

At Mandai Wildlife WEST

Han’s Union — good for a straightforward family meal before or after the park. 

COLLIN’S® — a good choice for Western food and dinner, which is what we chose. 

Copper Chimney — good if your family prefers Indian or Indian-Chinese food; it also has halal options. 

Old Chang Kee Coffee House — useful for a quick snack rather than a full meal. 

Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique & Sandwich Bar — a nice option for a dessert or light meal at Mandai Wildlife WEST. 

Food Republic at Mandai Wildlife EAST — a larger food-court option with around 25 stalls, especially useful if your family wants lots of different choices. 

👶 Is Bird Paradise Good for a 15-Month-Old?

Yes—I’d definitely recommend it.

But I wouldn’t approach it like you’re trying to “complete” the whole park. With a 15-month-old, the goal is more about experiencing the environment.

What I think toddlers will enjoy most:

I’d pack:

• Stroller
• Baby carrier
• Water bottle
• Snacks
• Extra clothes
• Diapers
• Wet wipes
• Sunscreen
• Small towel
• Swimwear/swim diaper if using Egg Splash
• Light cardigan for Penguin Cove
• Portable fan
• Small comfort toy for nap time

Bird Paradise provides a complimentary shuttle between the entrance and Central Plaza, and stroller/trike rental options are available on a first-come, first-served basis. 

🗓️ My Recommended Afternoon Itinerary

If you’re visiting with a toddler around the same age, I’d actually recommend something close to our schedule:

12:00 PM — Arrive at Mandai
12:00–1:00 PM — Lunch at Han’s Union
1:00 PM — Enter Bird Paradise
1:00–3:00 PM — Explore aviaries + Penguin Cove
3:00 PM — Keeper talk / continue exploring
3:30–4:15 PM — Crimson Wetlands / Lory Loft
4:15 PM — Snack near Egg Splash
4:30 PM — Toddler nap
5:00 PM — Wake baby
5:00 PM — Wings of the World at Sky Amphitheatre
5:45 PM — Walking around aviaries before leaving Bird Paradise
6:00 PM onwards — Dinner at COLLIN’S

This is much more realistic with a toddler than trying to squeeze every single activity into one afternoon.

💛 Our Takeaway

Our afternoon at Bird Paradise wasn’t about seeing every bird or completing every attraction. It was about letting my 15-month-old experience a completely different world.

She got to see colourful birds, hear unfamiliar sounds, walk through tropical habitats, watch penguins swim, take a little nap when she needed one, and then wake up just in time for a spectacular bird presentation.

And I think that’s the best way to visit Bird Paradise with a toddler: don’t rush. Follow their rhythm, take breaks, and let the park itself become the activity.
